Mark Kensett On Capturing Culture

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you may have seen Mark Kensett snapping his way around the C4DI building, taking shots of our coworking spaces, upstairs offices, meeting areas and community members.

Mark is a freelance photographer, specialising in commercial shots, people, food and travel.

We spoke with our resident cameraman to chat about the art of capturing the community spirit and culture of businesses and organisations.

“When I step through those rotating doors, the word ‘community’ instantly springs to mind,” Mark enthuses.

“There’s a really positive buzz here, with people interacting, encouraging and collaborating with each other. This is why I enjoy coming here and shooting.”

Mark has had a camera in his hand since he was just thirteen years old and since then has worked with some large organisations, including the University of Hull, Hull York Medical School, William Jackson Food Group and a human rights charity that frequently sends him across the world to work.

“What I like about C4DI is that it’s not one large corporation. You’re still part of something big but the culture isn’t institutionalised – it’s organic and progressive,” he adds.

The talented image-maker learned his craft on the job, after being offered work by a company at just seventeen-years-old. After twelve years, he decided to set up his own business, focusing on the areas he was most passionate about.

“Over the years, I’ve gained a lot of insight and experience into how different businesses work and how to best capture their core values,” Mark explains.

“It’s all about extracting the right information beforehand to ensure that you can get the best shots that that business wants. I need to know all sorts, from the culture of the business to what the photos will be eventually used for.”

From here, Mark works with his clients to produce stunning imagery that encapsulates the essence of the business and helps the team to shine.

We’re sure you’ll agree that Mark’s work is inspiring. If you would like to find out more, please visit his website.

In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for the C4DI brochure, which will include many examples of Mark’s creations.
