VirusCube

viruscube.com

I am a fifteen year old student in year 10 and really enjoying learning coding and computer science. With the extensive free time that the COVID-19 outbreak has brought to many of us, I decided to build a virus tracker website, which has a very simple, colourful and understandable user interface, so that people can view the latest figures and information with ease, including statistics for each country, such as total deaths or total cases per million. I originally got the idea from a web site that somebody else created, but felt there was much greater scope for exploring the information in more depth.

The newest feature I’ve implemented is the ability to view the R values for countries that have published them. My site is currently the first to display these together, and remains the only one. The R value measures how many people, on average, one person would infect, giving a very useful indicator about how infectious a country is at a given moment in time.  There are also extensions for applications which use the data from my site. You can view all of this and more at https://www.viruscube.com/.

The website is organic, and I am constantly updating it, and trying to come up with more interesting facts. I want to start analysing and extrapolating the data so that I can provide browsers with even more interesting information. For example, I might try to analyse the relationship between a country’s deaths per million alongside its population density, to see if patterns and trends are emerging.

Currently, I’m working on a custom newsfeed and have added an up-to-date timeline, showing milestones in the COVID-19 statistics, all of which will be displayed on the main dashboard.
I have made sure to improve my skillset, to use in years to come.

I would really welcome any input, advice and ideas as to how I could improve the site both technically and informationally.
