We’ve been having regular updates from Mike in Antarctica, discussing the (very cold) weather down there and what they’ve been doing on the British Antarctic Survey! 

‘Good morning from the cold place’ is usually how Mike starts his updates when he gets a break from work in the snow, met with excited responses from C4DI members eager to find out what he’s been up to.

The first thing that usually comes up in conversation, which is typical when two Brits have a chat, is the weather! No matter how hard we try to convince Mike that the weather in Hull is miserable and cold, he always comes back with something like “It’s not so bad here, only -4.8” or “only -8 at the moment — not too bad at all”.

Only -8°C… Not too bad at all…

Makes our lows of 2-3°C seem like summer(ish…)! After the expected chat about the weather we also get treated to a couple of photographs of the stunning landscape in Antarctica, that is, when it’s at all visible. 

The advantage of having heavy cloud is that it warms the air up a little, but as Mike states, it “makes for tricky photos” when the sky blends in almost completely with the ground, meaning the horizon is pretty much invisible.
